Santons de Provence
(Provençal: "santoun," or "little saint") are small (2.5-15 cm.) hand-painted, terracotta figurines depicting the Nativity and produced in Provence a region in southeastern France. In a traditional Provençal crèche, there are about 55 individual figures representing various characters from Provençal village life such as the scissors grinder, the fishwife, the blind man, and the chestnut seller.
As is customary for most French homes, I started to creating my own Crèche for our family. I took so much pleasure in painting the small characters that I continued to order unpainted figurines from Santonniers, in Provence.
Santons are not so wellknown in the United Kingdom, but I continue to paint them and organize presentations to tell their story to the public.
I am now invited to exhibit them every year during the Christmas season, at the University of Birmingham Barber Institute Art Gallery and other venues.
Les santons de Provence sont de petites figurines en argile, très colorées, représentant, dans la crèche de Noël, la scène de la nativité, les Rois Mages et les bergers, ainsi que toute une série de petits personnages, figurant les habitants d’un village provençal et leurs métiers traditionnels.
Au départ, pour suivre la coutume, j'ai créé une crèche pour mes enfants. Très vite, donner vie à ces petits personnages en les peignant d'une manière très individuelle, m'a passionnée. Cette tradition étant peu connue dans ce Pays, j'ai entrepris de la présenter au public, tout en exposant mes santons.
